GROTESQUE FOR PIANO, PERCUSSION AND SPEAKER
Charlemagne possessed an Elephant named Abul Abbas, a gift from the Caliph of Baghdad, Harun ar-Raschid. The work for percussionists, piano and speaker describes the exotic animal's arduous journey across the Alps. The audience travels through the mountains along with the Elephant and becomes part of a grotesque power play that ignores the suffering of the giant.
The performances take place in the workshops of the Rhetian Railway in Landquart, on occasion of its 125-year jubilee. A new composition by Fritz Hauser, Vera Kappeler, Lucas Niggli and Peter Conradin Zumthor, narrated by Jan Ratschko, lighted by Ursula Degen.
