THE IMAGE OF CHARLEMAGNE IN HISTORICAL REFLECTION
Charlemagne has been portrayed for more than 1200 years. Many art-historical eras gave the Frankish Sovereign a new face. Miniatures, oil paintings, gold busts, sketches, bronze statues and war memorials depict Charles in ever new ways. Every era reinvents him, uses and abuses him for its own purposes, lifts him on a pedestal and topples him down again, according to its respective zeitgeist.
Martin Leuthold, chief costume designer for Origen, has compiled forty portraits of Charlemagne, captured them on glass and framed them in wood. A great man in pocket format, showing one thing above all: Charles is not Charles is not Charles.
